Tired of Killing

by Daniele Vicari

Based on a true story and Antonio Zagari's autobiographical novel, this gripping crime drama unveils the inner workings of Italy's most powerful mafia through the eyes of a reluctant hitman - while painting a powerful portrait of a generation rising up for freedom. World premiere at the 2025 Venice International Film Festival.

While the Calabrian mafia is spreading its influence in the early 70s, Antonio, son of the high-ranking 'Ndrangheta boss Giacomo Zagari, finds himself killing more and more frequently, ultimately realising that he isn't suited to this extreme lifestyle. While his generation rises up in factories, universities and public squares, Antonio finds the strength to defy his father, rejecting his legacy.

Press Quotes

“A story about the first expansion of the 'Ndrangheta into the far north, among the early workers' and students' movements, with a style that is never indulgent, underpinned by a profound moral tension… Gabriel Montesi lends his protagonist all his acting skills to play a ruthless executor of his father's criminal orders. … The director chooses to support his story through a ‘classic' narrative style, never adrenaline-fueled or hyperbolic, so as not to give rise to possible romanticizations of his protagonists with the fascination of their actions. Certainly, it is a choice that, in contemporary cinematic aesthetics, is unsettling and perhaps alienating due to its consistent vintage quality, but it perfectly reflects the moral position of its director.”
MYMOVIES.IT

„Avoids glorifying the protagonist, who is undoubtedly fascinating in his contradictions… Ammazzare stanca is flawless, with solid direction and cinematography that effectively conveys the ambiguity of the characters.”
SENTIERISELVAGGI

„The film shows mafia rituals and murders without filters, but also the pain and profound crisis of those born into criminal families. A well-made film, supported by excellent performances and appreciable directorial choices: the camera work, soundtrack, and dialogue construction do justice to a story that deserves to be known.“
NONSOLOCINEMA

„With the aim of prompting the viewer to reflect on the expansion of these criminal organizations and their devastating impact on individual lives, the film explores the inner conflict of a man who begins to question the criminal code not so much for moral reasons as for his intolerance of an identity imposed on him since childhood. With a sober, dry style, devoid of concessions and any sentimental indulgence, Daniele Vicari, moving between the reality of organized crime and the psychological dissolution of a man in crisis, between light and shadow, focuses not so much on the act of seeking forgiveness as on that of ceasing to obey. In this sense, the first part of the film has its own solidity thanks to its essential staging, gloomy photography, and skillful use of silence, elements that contribute to creating an oppressive atmosphere, a portrait of a ferocious microcosm made up of suffocating family hierarchies and obedience without alternatives. A courageous work that leaves its mark.“
THINK MOVIES

„An all-star Italian cast. What did I like about this film? That Vicari had the courage to make a film somewhat in the style of Scorsese or Tarantino, but in my opinion more like Scorsese. It tells a story about criminals without passing judgment, without taking sides. This is something that Italian cinema has rarely done. It is a film with a tight pace and a very tense atmosphere. Gabriel Montesi is perfect.“
LA STAMPA

„Antonio Zagari is played by Gabriel Montesi, who, after a series of successful supporting roles, takes center stage, physically gigantic compared to the other characters, changing his face several times. … Andrea Fuorto is very good at showing the change from a carefree boy who loves riding his motorcycle with his friend Riboli to a cocaine-addicted vampire who will have his friend's death on his conscience. Vicari manages to give his own interpretation of the gangster movie genre… Antonio's introspection is incredibly authentic and necessary.Antonio entrusts Angela with his autobiography, pages and pages of confessions, names, and accusations that will lead to the launch of Operation Isola Felice. This is how Antonio Zagari killed his ghosts, with a pen and a notebook of blank pages."
TAXI DRIVERS

„An enjoyable, interesting film with an important and, above all, topical social message, in times like these, when organized crime has disappeared from our radar, almost as if we had forgotten how much harm it has done us.“
