Oscar winner Anna Magnani (The Rose Tattoo) stars as a screen-struck mother, convinced that her daughter's star potential is her ticket to a better life, in a performance that Hollywood legend Bette Davis called “brilliant, uninhibited and full of volcanic, earthy power.”

When a film studio announces its search for a child actress, Maddalena sets her hopes on getting the job for her daughter Maria. She spends all the family's savings having the graceless child coached, primped and beautified before the screen test. When it is over, Maddalena sneaks into the projection room to hear the studio's decision but is devastated to find everyone laughing at Maria's abysmal performance. After unleashing a tirade of insults, she returns home, a sadder and wiser woman.
