Munich, 21 January 2010. Beta Cinema has acquired the international and German rights to the bittersweet love story AU REVOIR TAIPEI and is presenting the film in the Forum section of this year's Berlin Film Festival. Executive produced by Wim Wenders, the film by American-Taiwanese director Arvin Chen (Silver Bear for MEI, Berlinale 2007) is an homage to the Taiwanese metropolis and tells the story of a lovesick young man who yearns to go to Paris. But over the course of one last, extraordinary night in Taipei he finds that the excitement and romance he was longing for is already there.
"I feel a connection to Arvin through our love of films about cities," says Wim Wenders (WINGS OF DESIRE, BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB, PALERMO SHOOTING) when discussing his commitment to AU REVOIR TAIPEI. Two-time Emmy Award-winning cameraman Michael Fimognari (DARE/Sundance 2009) portrays an exotic, exclusively nocturnal Taipei. Starring against this backdrop of shimmering colors are popular Taiwanese pop singer Amber Kuo, Lawrence Ko (LUST, CAUTION/Ang Lee), who is being hailed as a new breakout star, and show star and singer Frankie Gao, well-known in Chinese-speaking Asia. The film was produced by In-Ah Lee (Greensky Films), Atom Cinema (distributor of PERSEPOLIS, BECOMING JANE and ONCE) and Cathay-Keris Films (distributor of THE LIVES OF OTHERS), which will also bring AU REVOIR TAIPEI into cinemas in Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia.
Kai, a brokenhearted young man from Taipei, yearns to be with his girlfriend, who's left for Paris.  He spends his days working at his parents’ noodle restaurant and his nights trying to learn French at the local bookstore, where he meets Susie, a sweet but lonely girl who works there. Afraid of losing his girlfriend, and in need of money to get to Paris, he accepts a dubious offer from a local gangster – deliver a mysterious package to Paris.  It’s the beginning of a wild night for Kai, at the end of which he realizes that leaving both Susie and Taipei will only take him further away from true love.
AU REVOIR TAIPEI will be given its world premiere screening at the Berlinale's Forum on Valentine's Day, which corresponds this year to Chinese New Year (14 February). The Asian premiere will take place at the Hong Kong International Film Festival in March. The domestic release in Taiwan is planned for April.
