November 6, 2009. Munich-based sales company BETA CINEMA has taken on international rights to “North Face” director Philipp Stölz's next feature film “GOETHE !”

Budgeted at USD 9.5 million, “GOETHE !” stars German rising talent Alexander Fehling (Inglorious Basterds), Moritz Bleibtreu (The Baader Meinhof Complex), Burghart Klaußner (The White Ribbon), Henry Hübchen (Go For Zucker) and newcomer Miriam Stein.

GOETHE !” is modern pop fairytale in the vein of “Shakespeare In Love” and “Amadeus”. Germany, 1772 - the young and tumultuous Johann Goethe (Alexander Fehling) is sent by his father (Henry Hübchen) to a sleepy little town to mend his ways after failing his law exams. At first, he tries to do his best at the Supreme Court and even convinces his superior Kestner (Moritz Bleibtreu). But then Lotte (Miriam Stein) enters his life and nothing is the same as before as they fall in love with one another. However, Johann is unaware that Lotte is in fact already engaged to Kestner...

The dramatic and unfulfilled love between the young poet and Lotte was the template for Goethe’s masterpiece "The Sorrows of Young Werther".

The film is produced by Christoph Müller (Sophie Scholl: The Final Days) and is currently in postproduction. Warner will release the film in Germany in the second half of 2010.

GOETHE !” is a deutschfilm production in co-production with Senator Film Produktion and SevenPictures Film and was supported Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Filmstiftung NRW, German Federal Film Board (FFA) and German Federal Film Fund (DFFF).
