30. August 2010

Munich, 30 August 2010. Beta Cinema presents competition entries at all major international film festivals this fall. Kicking off the series is Ascanio Celestini's THE BLACK SHEEP, which will be premiered at the Lido on 2 September as the first Italian film into competition at the Venice Film Festival. Two days later, John Turturrro's PASSIONE – A MUSICAL ADVENTURE will be screened in the official section “out of competition” at the Venice Film Festival. PASSIONE, an homage to the musical legacy of the southern Italian city of Naples, will also be screened in the "Special Presentations" section at the Toronto International Film Festival. The World Film Festival in Montréal is showing Florian Cossens' THE DAY I WASN’T BORN in its official competition. Two Beta Cinema films are in competition at San Sebastian: COLOURS IN THE DARK with Bruno Ganz and Senta Berger, and Augustí Villaronga's BLACK BREAD, which is set in post-war Spain.

The EOS-coproduction A QUIET LIFE, starring Toni Servillo and Juliane Koehler, is scheduled for a competition premiere at a major fall festival. The Icelandic film KING'S ROAD, which drew strong viewer interest in early August on Locarno's Piazza Grande, will be screened at the Vancouver International Film Festival in October. Further highlights of Beta Cinema's fall line-up are GOETHE! (director: Philipp Stölzl), which will be brought to German cinemas by Warner Bros. (14 October), and Jo Baier's THE END IS MY BEGINNING with Bruno Ganz and Elio Germano (best actor – Cannes 2010), which Universum Film is launching in Germany on 7 October.

THE BLACK SHEEP is the story of Nicola, the black sheep of the family, who has been living in an asylum for 35 years now. He had fled into a world of make-believe, which suddenly falls apart when he finds himself face to face with his childhood sweetheart in a near supermarket. THE BLACK SHEEP is the feature-film directorial debut of the successful Italian actor and author Ascanio Celestini, who also wrote the script and stars in the lead role. The film is produced by Madeleine in association with Rai Cinema and BIM.

In PASSIONE – A MUSICAL ADVENTURE, the Italian-American actor and director John Turturro (O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU', BARTON FINK) undertakes a musical journey to Naples, the biggest juke-box in the world, which has accumulated an inexhaustible repertoire of songs throughout the centuries. PASSIONE is a production of Skydancers and Squeezed Heart.

In the teamWorx production THE DAY I WASN’T BORN, Jessica Schwarz (“Buddenbrooks”) plays a young German woman who unexpectedly comes across the trail of her roots in Buenos Aires and nearly loses her own identity while searching for the truth.

Bruno Ganz (DOWNFALL) and Senta Berger play the lead roles in Sophie Heldman's COLOURS IN THE DARK. After 50 years of marriage, a couple realizes that they have only little time left together. COLOURS IN THE DARK is a coproduction of unafilm:Köln and Switzerland's Dschoint Ventschr Filmproduktion.

BLACK BREAD by Spanish award winning cult director Augustí Villaronga (THE SEA, EL NINO DE LA LUNA) follows a boy on his arduous journey into the world of adults and of their moral consciousness. Based on the best selling novel of Emili Teixidor the film depicts the story of young Andreu, who discovers two buried bodies in the woods in rural Catalunya, right after the end of the civil war. With his father being wrongly accused of the murder, Andreu sets out to find the real killers. Starring in the Massa d’Or production are Sergi López (PAN’S LABYRINTH) and Eduard Fernández (BIUTIFUL).

As a former Mafia killer, Toni Servillo (IL DIVO, GOMORRAH) hopes to find A QUIET LIFE in a provincial German town. But then his son shows up, who is following in the deadly footsteps of his father. The female lead in the EOS/Acaba coproduction is played by Juliane Koehler (NOWHERE IN AFRICA).

Starring Daniel Bruehl (GOODBYE, LENIN!, INGLORIOUS BASTERDS) and Gisli Örn Garðarsson (PRINCE OF PERSIA) in the lead roles, the Icelandic tragicomedy KING'S ROAD (Mystery Island, AVE) by director Valdis Óskarsdóttir (COUNTRY WEDDING) is set in a run-down trailer-park outside of Reykjavik.

In GOETHE! (deutschfilm), Philipp Stölzl (NORTHFACE) has created a modern pop fairy tale that evokes the Sturm-und-Drang years of the young poet (Alexander Fehling, INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS), his years in Wetzlar, and his first big love.

Based on the best-seller of the same name by the Spiegel’s former Southeast-Asia correspondent Tiziano Terzani, the drama THE END IS MY BEGINNING depicts the moving farewell to the dying journalist by his son. The collina film production is directed by Jo Baier ("Stauffenberg").
