Munich, 24 Jan 2012. Agnieszka Holland’s IN DARKNESS is nominated for the Academy Award in the category Best Foreign Language Film. The Polish film, based on the true story “In the Sewers of Lvov”, is one of the five films still in the race for the 84th Academy Awards.

Produced by The Film Works, Schmidtz Katze Filmkollektiv and Zebra Films and starring Robert Wieckiewicz, Benno Fürmann (NORTH FACE, MERRY CHRISTMAS), Maria Schrader (AIMEE & JAGUAR) and Herbert Knaup (THE LIVES OF OTHERS, RUN LOLA RUN), it tells the story of Leopold Socha, a sewer worker and petty thief in Nazi-occupied Lvov, Poland. Stumbling upon a group of Jews in the sewers, he agrees to hide them for a price. What starts out as a straightforward business arrangement becomes something unexpected, as they all try to outwit certain death during 14 months of intense danger. In the US, Sony Classics will release IN DARKNESS on February 10, 2012.
