Cannes, 17 May 2013. Distribution rights for Berlinale-winner CHILD’S POSE and German box-office hit OH BOY are almost sold out. “There are only few remaining territories left”, says Beta Cinema’s managing director Dirk Schuerhoff. “We have registered an extremely strong interest of international buyers at the Cannes Film Market.”
At the Côte d’Azur, the Munich-based company closed a number of deals, such as for CHILD’S POSE with Spain (Golem), Japan (Magic Hour), Israel (Lev Cinemas), Norway (Tour de Force), Denmark (Camera), Poland (Aurora), Czech Republic/Slovakia (Film Europe), Hungary (Cirko), Bulgaria (Bulgaria Film), Brazil (Imovision) and Mexico (Cinemas Nueva). Calin Peter Netzer’s film will be released in Germany by X-Verleih this week on May 23rd.
The tragic-comedy OH BOY with Germany’s rising star Tom Schilling, recently honoured with six German Film Awards including Best Film and Best Director, went to Japan (Cetera), Russia (P&I Films), Hungary (Cirko), Norway (Fidalgo), Serbia/Montenegro (Discovery) and Mexico (Cinema Nueva Era). OH BOY will be released in Benelux by ABC-Cinemien on May 30, in France (Diaphana) on June 5.
Japan’s New Select acquired LE GRAND CAHIER (aka THE NOTEBOOK) by acclaimed director János Szász. Beta Cinema presents first teaser of the Hungarian-German WWII drama based on Agota Kristof's famous novel about two young brothers who grow up in a village on the Hungarian border during war time. Being mistreated by their cruel grandmother they must learn every trick of evil to survive in the absurd world of adults. Academy Award-nominee Christian Berger (“The White Ribbon”, “Caché”) serves as DOP.
Further deals have been signed for THE GIRL WITH NINE WIGS by Academy Award nominee Marc Rothemund with Poland (Aurora) and Taiwan (Swallow Wings). The Norwegian/German thriller TWO LIVES was bought by Poland (Aurora). South Korea’s Company L snapped up the family-entertainment feature FAMOUS FIVE I.
