Toronto, 6 Sept 2013. Beta Cinema has picked up all distribution rights outside the US and Canada to WALTER, a heartwarming comedy about a ticket-tearer at a local cinema believing himself to be the son of God. Starring Andrew J. West (“CSI”, “Bones”) as Walter and Academy Award Nominee Virginia Madsen (“Sideways”), Academy Award Nominee William H. Macy (“Shameless”, “Fargo”), Neve Campbell (“Scream”, “Wild Things”), Justin Kirk (“Weeds”) and Milo Ventimiglia (“Heros”, “That´s My Boy”) in further roles, the film is directed by Anna Mastro (“Gossip Girl”).

WALTER is based on a short story by award winning author Paul Shoulberg. The picture is produced by Zero Gravity (Mark Holder and Christine Holder), Purple Bench Films (Brenden Hill), Ryan Harris and Barry Films (Benito Mueller). Demarest Films is on board as Executive Producer.

Walter (Andrew J. West) believes himself to be the son of God. As such, it is his responsibility to judge whether people will spend eternity in heaven or hell. That’s a lot to manage along with his job as a ticket-tearer at a movie theater, his loving but neurotic mother (Virginia Madsen), and his growing but unspoken affection for his co-worker Kendall (Leven Rambin). When one day Greg (Justin Kirk), a ghost stuck in purgatory, interrupts Walter’s daily routine, asking him for his judgement, everything comes to a halt. Greg and his shrink, Dr. Corman (William H. Macy), help Walter to reassess the meaning of life, which may include finding a way to win over Kendall’s heart....

WALTER is smart and inspired writing combined with a fantastic cast that represents American independent filmmaking in the best sense. Director Anna Mastro addresses the collective theme of loss and our dealing with it in such light but heartfelt and life-affirming ways that I am confident it will resonate with audiences around the world”, comments Thorsten Ritter, EVP at Beta Cinema.

“We are delighted to cooperate with Zero Gravity Films, and Barry Films for the first time and help take this promising director’s vision to as many international screens as possible.”

Anna Mastro is an award winning director active in commercials, music videos, television and film. She recently directed an episode of CW's GOSSIP GIRL. Her short film BENCH SEAT, written by critically acclaimed screenwriter Neil LaBute has toured festivals worldwide. And, before that, she collaborated with director McG to produce two Pussycat Dolls-themed reality series for the CW.
