NEW YORK, NY – January 12, 2015 – Beta Cinema has come on board to handle all international markets in the sale of writer and director Prashant Nair’s “Umrika,” selected for the 2015 Sundance Film Festival’s World Cinema Dramatic Competition. North America sales will be handled by ICM Partners.

World premiering at Salt Lake City on Saturday, January 24th at The Egyptian Theater, “Umrika” (Hindi for America) is the only Indian title in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition. “Umrika” is writer and director Prashant Nair’s second feature film after 2011’s “Delhi in a Day.”  Nair took “Umrika” through the Sundance Labs. “Umrika” is produced by Swati Shetty and Manish Mundra, runs 100 minutes and is in Hindi with English subtitles.

Umrika” stars up & coming actors Suraj Sharma, who broke out in Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi” before appearing in Disney’s “Million Dollar Arm” and on this past season of Showtime’s “Homeland,” and Tony Revolori, one of the SAG Awards nominated lead stars of Wes Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel;” Revolori also stars in “Dope,” another title at  Sundance.

A small village in India is invigorated when one of their own travels to America (aka “Umrika”) and details his adventures through letters home, sparking community debate and inspiring hope. But when the letters mysteriously stop coming, his younger brother Rama (Suraj Sharma) sets out on a journey to find him. With the help of his best friend Lalu (Tony Revolori), Rama retraces his brother’s path to find himself charting one of his own.

Set in the mid-1980s, “Umrika” is a funny and meaningful story of the lengths taken to realize one's dreams.

With “Umrika,” filmmaker Prashant Nair continues his growing style -- that he first exhibited in his debut feature film “Delhi in a Day” -- of deftly incorporating light touches of comedy while also bringing attention to the complex and, at times, difficult realities of contemporary Indian life.
