Munich, 12 May 2016. Beta Cinema assembles some of the most renowned European directors in its roster of upcoming titles for this year’s Cannes Film Festival and Market, among them Academy Award-winner Stefan Ruzowitzky, Academy Award-nominee Agnieszka Holland as well as Un Certain Regard-winner Andreas Dresen and Golden Bear-winner Calin Peter Netzer.

The impressive directors’ slate ranges from thriller to family entertainment and is headed by hard-boiled genre film Hell (WT), the latest feature from versatile Austrian director Stefan Ruzowitzky, the Academy award-winner for “The Counterfeiters” who had his breakthrough with the horror thriller “Anatomy”, a stunning box-office hit that also provided a career-defining lead role for Franka Potente. Hell is a tight thriller about a young woman witnessing a brutal murder of a fanatic Islamist serial killer. Shot by DoP Benedict Neuenfels (“The Counterfeiters”, “A Woman in Berlin”) and starring Violetta Schurawkow (“Head Full of Honey”) and Tobias Moretti (“The Dark Valley”), the film is produced by genre experts Allegro Film (“The Dark Valley”, “Dead in 3 Days”) and Amazing Film Company and is currently in post-production. First footage will be revealed at the Beta Cinema Cannes office.

Two times Academy Award-nominee Agnieszka Holland (“In Darkness”, “Europa, Europa”, “Burning Bush”) recently wrapped shooting on Game Count, a thriller based on Olga Tokarczuk’s best-selling novel “Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead” about mysterious killings without clear traces in a small mountain village on the Czech-Polish border. The film is produced by TOR Film Production in co-production with Heimatfilm, Nutprodukce, Chimney, Agora Odra-Film, National Audiovisual Institute, HBO Europe, ZDF, Arte, Czech Television and Film i Väst. DOP is Jolanta Dylewska (“In Darkness”).

Cannes and Berlin acclaimed veteran director Andreas Dresen (“Cloud 9”, “Stopped on Track”, “Grill Point”) and Constantin Film’s producer Oliver Berben follow the story of Timm Thaler, based on the world-famous novel by James Kruess. Timm closes a momentous deal with the devil: he sells his laughter for the promise to win every bet in the world. Only with the help of his dear friend Ida is he able to defeat the black magic. Timm Thaler is set to be released just before Christmas in Germany. Dresen’s latest movie “As We Were Dreaming” played in competition at last year’s Berlinale, while “Stopped on Track” and “Cloud 9” both won awards in Un Certain Regard in Cannes.

Romanian director Calin Peter Netzer (Golden-BearWinner 2013 for ‘Child’s Pose’) and DOP Andrei Butica (“Child’s Pose”) created an intimate relationship-drama with Ana, Mon Amour. Despite Ana’s psychic dysfunctions and the circumstances of their backgrounds, Ana and Cezar fight for their love, creating a closeness which drives them into a fatal co-dependency. The film is still in production by Parada Film in co-production with augenschein Filmproduktion and France’s Sophie Dulac productions.
