London/Munich, 19 Feb 2019. London-based Modern Films has taken on the UK and Irish rights of Beta Cinema’s double-Oscar nominated NEVER LOOK AWAY, written&directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck.Germany’s entry and nominee in the Foreign Language category, which also picked up a nomination for Best Cinematography (Caleb Deschanel), has garnered much acclaim and commercial attention in its international releases, particularly in the US where it recently opened through Sony Pictures Classics, with a reported stronger screen average than fellow contenders this year Cold War and Shoplifters.

From the director of The Lives of Others, NEVER LOOK AWAY is an intergenerational tale of love, sorrow, art and politics spanning three decades of 20th century German history, from Nazism through much of the Cold War. Inspired by real events, it is the story of a young art student (Tom Schilling) who falls in love with a fellow student (Paula Beer). Her father (Sebastian Koch), a renowned doctor, disapproves of their relationship and vows to destroy it. Connections between their personal histories unfold as secrets from the past and crimes committed come to light over time.

This deal represents a partnership between the producers, sales agent Beta Cinema and distributor Modern Films, as well as the cultural communications agency, Sutton, who also worked on the American launch and are currently advising on the Academy Award campaign. They plan to all come together to build audiences around a more event-driven release plan, linking key elements of the story from the historical narrative to the art world trajectory to the dramaturgy and intrigue of the characters across the film, art and other creative sectors.
Details of how and when it will be released will be confirmed soon.
Modern Films was set up in 2017 with a remit to cross cultural boundaries with filmed content and link major institutions with cinema exhibition to extend viewing options and platforms for audiences.
