Munich, 3 November 2017. On the heels of its world premiere in the prestigious Platform Competition at Toronto, Beta Cinema has secured numerous sales for Iram Haq’s critically acclaimed WHAT WILL PEOPLE SAY and is looking to close remaining territories at the AFM. The gripping Norwegian-Pakistani drama about a young girl finding her own way between freedom and tradition was sold to Kino Lorber (USA), ARP (France), Lucky Red (Italy), Avalon (Spain), Praesens (Switzerland), Cinemien (Benelux), Feelgood (Greece), Cine Colombia (Colombia) and Lev Cinema (Israel). Further deals are currently in negotiation and the film is enjoying a strong theatrical release on its home turf in Norway with over 60,000 admissions to date. Releases across Scandinavia as well as co-producing territories Germany and Austria will follow.

WHAT WILL PEOPLE SAY follows fifteen-year-old Nisha (Maria Mojdeh), who lives a double life between obeying Pakistan traditions and values and enjoying the freedom as a Norwegian teenager. One day, Nisha´s two worlds brutally collide when her father, Adil Hussain (“Life of Pi”), catches her in bed with her white Norwegian boyfriend. Nisha is kidnapped by her parents and sent to live in Pakistan. At first, Nisha feels alone and afraid in the strange, new land, but then, she slowly starts to discover her parents’ culture in a new way.

The feature, in which Iram Haq included autobiographical characteristics, was celebrated at its TIFF-premiere by audience and international media. WHAT WILL PEOPLE SAY has been produced by Mer Film in co-production with Rohfilm Factory and Zentropa Sweden and premieres today (November 3rd) at the AFM at 1.30 pm, AMC Santa Monica 4.
