Munich, 22 January 2016. Onlyweeks ahead of this year’s Berlinale, Beta Cinema takes the worldwide rights for German competition entry 24 WEEKS, thesecond feature of director/writer Anne Zohra Berrached. 24 WEEKS stars multiple award-winning Julia Jentsch (among others Silver Bear for Best Actress in the Academy Award nominated SOPHIE SCHOLL: THE FINAL DAYS) and was produced by zero one (Locarno Audience Award winning/Toronto entry THE PEOPLE VS. FRITZ BAUER).

Director Anne Zohra Berrached, whose first feature TWO MOTHERS won the Dialogue in Perspective Award at Berlinale 2013 and the First Steps Award, was joined by script writer Carl Gerber and tells the story of cabaret performer Astrid (Julia Jentsch), who six months pregnant learns that her unborn child will be severely disabled. She and her husband Marcus (Bjarne Maedel) have a choice, but little time… A strong nature with a witty answer to everything, Astrid now feels lost, on her own, impossible to continue her comedy routine. Ultimately only she who is bearing the child can take this weighty decision. What will she do? Who decides whether the child will have a life worth living?

With breathtaking radiance, high risk and incredible intensity, Julia Jentsch plays a woman of today who is nearly driven to madness by a decision that is practically impossible to take. Behind his casual exterior, Bjarne Maedel depicts the husband at her side with great fragility. The narrative leads the couple from the spotlights to loneliness, as everyday life appears increasingly unreal and banal; at some point it becomes clear that there is no right or wrong, and that medical progress sometimes forces us to decide between life and death.

Julia Jentsch has been one of the most renowned German actresses after first being recognized internationally for her lead in THE EDUKATORS (Cannes Competition 2004). She was honored with the European Film Award and the German Film Award amongst others for her role as the quiet but determined resistance fighter Sophie Scholl.

The producer team states: “Anne Zohra Berrached confronts a topic which has not yet been told in German cinema. Together with her main cast, Julia Jentsch and Bjarne Mädel, she created a strong, visceral drama through the integration of fiction and realism. We are proud be invited to present 24 WEEKS in the context of the International Competition of the Berlinale and we are very pleased that the great achievement by Anne and her team receives this recognition and appreciation.”

24 WEEKS was produced by Thomas Kufus, Melanie Berke, and Tobias Büchner for zero one film in co-production with ZDF / Das kleine Fernsehspiel and Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg.
